Huckleberry Finn is the titular protagonist of the 1993 film The Adventures of Huck Finn and the deuteragonist of the 1995 film Tom and Huck. Appearances Film The Adventures of Huck Finn Huck is a half-literate son of a drunk. One night, his father, Pap, arrives and Huck is taken away to Pap's home. Jealous of Huck's money being kept away, Pap attacks Huck, but eventually passes out from exhaustion. Huck fakes his own death and runs away. He is accompanied by Jim, a slave who worked for Huck's foster family, and escaped the family out of fear for being sold off. The duo follow the Mississippi River to Cairo, Illinois, so Jim can escape to freedom without being arrested. They come across a wanted poster for Jim, falsely saying that he murdered Huck. Jim and Huck come across a sinking barge one night, and Jim notices Pap's corpse on the ship. Huck notices two sailors leaving one to drown in a room as the water comes crashing through. Huck and Jim's canoe sinks, but they steal another one, as the barge completely sinks underwater.

Fighting with Tom over the authenticity of genie stories, Tom goes to his usual method of asserting authority: his faith in books. "Shucks, it ain't no use to talk to you, Huck Finn. You don't seem to know anything, somehow—perfect sap-head" (1363). A little put-out by Tom's opinion, Huck decides to try rubbing an old tin lamp to see if a genie would appear. When nothing magical happens, Huck takes his first step towards maturity. "I reckoned he believed in the A-rabs and the elephants, but as for me I think different" (1363). Here he separates himself from Tom, and in doing so is no longer blindly following just to be accepted, and a putting aside of childish things. When reading carefully, it is evident that this mark of maturity is still present at the end of the novel. While going along with many of Tom's absurd ideas to free Jim, it is obvious that Huck isn't following blindly for acceptance or for fun. What he is doing is really much closer to humoring Tom, in exchange for his help.

Character profile for Huckleberry Finn from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (page 1)
Huck runs away from his abusive father and, with his companion, the runaway slave Jim, makes a long and frequently interrupted voyage down the Mississippi River on a raft. During the journey Huck encounters a variety of characters and types in whom the book memorably portrays almost every class living on or along the river. As a result of these experiences, Huck overcomes conventional racial prejudices and learns to respect and love Jim. The book's pages are dotted with idyllic descriptions of the great river and the surrounding forests, and Huck's good nature and unconscious humour permeate the whole. But a thread that runs through adventure after adventure is that of human cruelty, which shows itself both in the acts of individuals and in their unthinking acceptance of such institutions as slavery. The natural goodness of Huck is continually contrasted with the effects of a corrupt society. Together with Twain's novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), Adventures of Huckleberry Finn changed the course of children's literature in the United States as well as of American literature generally, presenting the first deeply felt portrayal of boyhood.
